Todea barbara King Fern Possibly late 2011

Todea barbara King Fern Possibly late 2011

This fern is a native of Australia and also South Africa. These seem to be hardy in milder areas, perhaps even in colder areas with some protection. They have a beautiful shuttlecock form, as they mature they develop a pseudotrunk with multiple crowns, I have seen one two metres in diameter, quite remarkable. These ferns are grown from spore and are about three years old. They prefer an acidic, moist soil and seem quite easy to grow. They have only been available for a short time but early indications are that they are surprisingly hardy in zone 8, to be safe be prepared to protect in harsh winters.
