Evergreen, height to 90cm, hardy.
A beautiful evergreen fern from Japan, one of the earliest to send new fronds in the spring, the photo was taken in late March. As it comes into frond so early you may have to protect new growth from frost, which could be scorched otherwise. These are a bright, fresh green, maturing to a darker shade.
The challenging species name means "twisted back scales", I'm sure a much more attractive attribute could have been selected for this truly gorgeous fern. Very rare in cultivation, which is a shame for such a lovely garden worthy plant.
