Fern Plugs

Plug plants are a great way to build up a fern collection on a budget. You just need 9cm pots, good compost and a little patience! Their small size makes them useful for other projects, such as making miniature tree ferns using Hygrolon or using in terrariums.

This photo gives an idea of the size of plant, with a Euro coin for scale, though the individual ferns change and grow quite rapidly through the year. The plants themselves are around one year old from spore (it is a slow process!).
