The species comes from the Eastern USA and Mexico. It produces a reasonably fast growing low ground cover in moist and shady areas. It is hardy enough in the south west, coastal and city microclimates, elsewhere it is a superb plant for the vivarium or bottle garden as it only grows a few centimetres high. As the plant grows it produces small roots that help the spread of the plant. It is a shallow rooter so can be pulled away and regrown elsewhere. It requires high humidity and shade to do well.
