Cheilanthes
Cheilanthes- Lip Fern
From Latin (= Lip Flower)- alluding to folded lip-like indusium surrounding the sporangia.
A large genus of small, evergreen ferns, found in dry rocky areas in warm temperate and tropical regions. Can be found in the most unlikely of places, for example in Sri Lanka I found one variety on basalt ridges in direct sunlight. They are best grown in sunny rockeries, good drainage is the key to success with these ferns. If they dry up too much the fronds will close up to conserve moisture. Protect from winter wet.
Can also be grown in containers of in an alpine house.
