A fabulous and very useful plant for shade, especially in this part of the world. The relatively mild winters and soft summers suit this plant perfectly. Indeed in most other parts of the world this is grown as a houseplant.
It loves a damp, shady and sheltered spot. Away from frost pockets it stays semi-evergreen, otherwise it be a herbaceous perennial. I have it growing well in raised beds in a very sheltered spot underneath deciduous shrubs such as Fuschia and Vibernum. The soil stays moist and it spreads very happily with the summer begonia like flowers atop the fleshy green and silver leaves.
